Teacher. Gardener. Optimistic Nihilist.
I have been a teacher in public education for over 20 years. While I began my career as a high school math teacher, I always found joy in learning how people learn about math and science. I currently use that knowledge to teach future teachers at the college level.
Like many other Xenials, life got busy, childhood joys faded, and for me, tragedies struck over the years with the passing of all three parents. I’ve always enjoyed landscaping and growing flowers at my home, but for a long time it was always accompanied with memories of my parents. Recently, I have learned to find my own joy in gardening, finding ways that I want to connect with the earth instead of trying to recreate what my parents loved.
When I was a kid, my mom had a wonderful wildflower shade garden in the backyard. I remember going on walks in the nearby woods with her to find new, native additions for her garden. We literally went into the woods with a trowel and a bucket, and always returned home with new treasures. My dad started branching out into a tiny vegetable garden, where he gave me space to plant carrots, the only vegetable I liked back then. I clearly remember harvesting my first carrot, and the joy I felt at eating something fresh from the ground is still to this day, unmatched. My stepmom also loved gardening, and she and my dad always planted what felt like hundreds of wave petunias every year, growing into cascades of pink everywhere.
